This past week was challenging. Without revealing the details, what showed up for me was where I spend my time and what makes me happy. Too often we are doing things that don’t fill our cup through obligations, commitments, and expectations.
Our time is exactly that, ours. We have a choice where to spend it and with whom.
I chose 3 months ago to join a committee to help with communications and social media. I sat through a committee meeting that left me feeling empty. I only have space in my life for things that bring me joy and are reciprocal. I resigned the next morning choosing my happiness and time and ultimately me.
Questions we should be constantly asking ourselves in all areas of our lives are: does this make me happy? Is there an equal exchange for my services and time? Any commitments where you are giving your time for free, need to add value to your life.
How often do you hold on to things that are draining you? I normally hold on as I can see potential and possibilities. Sometimes we hold on because of a deeply engraved belief such as I must finish what I start or I don’t want to let others down.
People are unhappy because they are holding on for whatever reason to things that no longer serve them. Maybe it’s a job that you are comfortable in, a relationship that’s not working but you are afraid to be alone, or a friendship that takes more than it gives.
Ask yourself today why you do what you do. We all have choices. Happiness is a choice. Saying no to others can mean saying yes to yourself.
